The time has come that I learn more about all types of buttons. While at the Phoenix Button Convention in February, Gary Brockman, a well known button dealer told me I should look in Mary Doyle’s copy of the Big Book of Buttons to gather more research on the new 18th century buttons I had just treated myself to.
I had never heard about this book so I thought I would buy it. Shockingly, it sells on Amazon between $340-$500 dollars. It’s the holy grail for button collectors and I wanted it.
Naturally I couldn’t afford that much & lucky for me I’ve made a friend in Mary Doyle. She’s the head of the AZ chapter of the button society and she was willing to sell me a previous edition of the book for a substantially lower price. The original book was so huge the binding split & she put all 800+ pages into sheet protectors & 3 huge, 3 ring binders. She ordered me a current price guide & now I’m set to learn, learn, learn.
Imagine my delight to discover today an Owl button I own is valued between $15-$20. Sweet. So long Mr. Owl, nice knowing you. heehee Altho the buttons don’t look exactly alike, the markings on the back identify them together.
There are so many button categories including cherubs, children, mythology, theatre & circus, sporting & transportation and the list goes on & on. I look forward to sharing them with you.
Email me a picture of your unusual button & I will try & look it up for you. [email protected]
